Yes, Counseling Can Help with Unwanted Same Sex Attraction

You’ve probably heard a steady drumbeat of messages in the mainstream media claiming that counseling for unwanted same-sex attraction is harmful. However, a new report published on the topic found that religious men with unwanted homosexuality – identity, behavior and attractions – were greatly helped by a variety of methods, including support groups and professional therapy. Many of those who participated reported shifts toward heterosexual attractions, behavior and identity. The group also showed “decreases in suicidality, depression, substance abuse, and increases in social functioning and self-esteem.Paul L. Santero, PhD, Neil E. This study has largely been ignored by mainstream media so we want you to be aware of the study and its outcome.

“Effects of Therapy on Religious Men Who Have Unwanted Same-Sex Attraction” was published in The Linacre Quarterly, a peer-reviewed journal from the Catholic Medical Association. Drs. Paul L. Santero, Neil E. Whitehead and Dolores Ballesteros, surveyed 125 men who had participated in ministry groups and/or private therapy.

Here’s just some of what the researchers found:

  • 64% of the participants reported that their motive for pursuing “sexual orientation change efforts” (SOCE) was not societal pressure but rather for religious reasons. 97% of the sample had help from professional therapists, and 86 % also received help from support groups – religious or secular.
  • 68% of the men reported “some to much reduction in their same-sex attraction and behavior and also an increase in their opposite sex attraction and behavior.”

The study also lines up with numerous other reports of people finding freedom from homosexuality – both individual testimonies and years of research. Here are just a few links to encourage you with the truth that people do leave homosexuality:
