Focus on the Family Celebrates Five Years of Helping Find Homes for Children Waiting to Be Adopted

Colorado Springs, Colo. – This November, Focus on the Family’s Wait No More outreach marks its five-year anniversary in finding forever homes for waiting children and teens in foster care.

Since its 2008 launch, Wait No More has held 21 half-day events in 14 states. The events have helped more than 2,600 families start the adoption process. Results like these are what prompted the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute to name Wait No More a national best practice in foster care adoption recruitment.

At the core of Wait No More’s success has been its collaborative model that brings together state and local child welfare officials, child placement agencies, and churches and ministries to educate families about adoption from foster care.

“Finding forever families for these precious, waiting kids is a shared responsibility,” said Kelly Rosati, vice president of Community Outreach and an adoptive mom of four. “Over the past five years, we’ve learned that great things happen when we bring different groups together for a great cause. God has blessed our work, and the winners are the children who now belong to families as a result.”

Wait No More events give families the opportunity to hear from adoptive parents, social workers and adopted youth about adoption from foster care. Participating adoption agencies answer questions and give families the chance to start the adoption process before they leave.

Along with Wait No More, Focus’ larger adoption and orphan care efforts also equip those who want to help adoptive families. The ministry’s W.R.A.P. resource provides practical tips on how they can “wrap” around adoptive families and offer support in ways such as prayer, respite care and acts of service. Practical help like this often makes all the difference for adoptive families.

“Adoptive families desperately need encouragement in their journey, and there are things that everyone in the Church can do to serve them,” said Rosati. “That’s why we’re asking the body of Christ to ‘wrap’ around these families who are often weary and feel inadequate.”

Focus on the Family is also hosting the Heart Gallery for the seventh time, featuring a collection of professional portraits highlighting children in Colorado awaiting adoption. The Heart Gallery will be located at Focus’ Welcome Center from Nov. 8 to Jan. 31, 2014.
